Archeologists for a day as we went to an actual dig. We split up and dug several buckets full of dirt then sifted them up above. This dig consists of the caverns under homes destroyed 2000 years ago. Almost every bucket has a piece of pottery or evidence of something disposed of by the former residents. We found pottery handles and old bones from meals. The next day turned to rain so we dressed for it. Also you can see our visit to the tunnel along the Western Wall.
Saturday Feb 23 We are on Mt Arbel which offers a panoramic view of the Sea of Galilee and the villages along its shore. This path is part of a three day walk called the Jesus Trail. The trail is popular among those that like to hike among the people of Israel. Not all in our group made it as far on this hill but we took the picture at the end of what we did walk. Also pictured are Richard, our Israeli guide and Daryl, who helped organize our trip. We are surrounded by wild flowers and Richard identified one after the other as we went along. Some in the group know their botany and loved seeing the variety. Richard has been a real blessing. Born in America he grew up in a Jewish home and moved here as an adult. He has realized the truth about the Messiah and is a strong believer. He brings a rich depth of Biblical truth to his explanations of our various stops. We happened to meet the archaeologist who discovered the location of the Pool of Siloam which is mentioned in John 9. I'll send a photo of the pool later when we are in Jerusalem. He was just enjoying a stroll on Mt Arbel today. Our trip is enjoying spring. The rains have decreased and the days are still cool. Note the jackets in the pictures. But the fields are blooming with color. We are enroute to Nazareth and more learning about first century life. While there we'll also enjoy a first century meal. The picture of the salmon was taken at dinner last night. This gives you an idea of how varied the foods are that we eat and how creative the presentation. Thanks for praying.
Day 1 of our tour of Israel. Here is the whole team at the arena (theater) at Caesarea. We heard the story of Paul's defense before Agrippa, and we toured the Hippodrome where chariots were raced. From here we saw Mount Carmel where Elijah faced the prophets of evil. This location provides an extraordinary view of the hills around Israel including Mt Tabor, Mt Hermon, etc. Finally we stopped at Meggido, a hill above the plain of Jezreel. Meggido is a rich area for exploring what a dig can reveal. Simultaneously you see buildings from the era of Solomon and the footing of a pagan temple that was there when Abraham entered the land 4000 years ago.
